Staff registers

In some sectors, it is obligatory to keep a staff register. This register will provide an overview of who is at work at any one time, even if they are unpaid or hired in.


Which sectors falls under the obligation?

The sectors which this applies to are restaurants and cafés, hairdressers, beauticians and the car repair and car care sector.

Staff registers can be kept manually in a book or in an electronic system which satisfies the relevant requirements concerning content. Anyone registered in the Brønnøysund Register Centre, in industries where personnel lists are mandatory, can order free personnel list from the Tax Administration.

Exceptions

You do not need to keep a staff register if you run a sole proprietorship and the staff only consist of yourself and your spouse/cohabiting partner or children under the age of 16.

The same applies to shared liability partnerships and limited companies if you are a managing director and also a partner or shareholder in the enterprise, or if the staff only consist of yourself and your spouse/cohabiting partner or children under 16.
